It just needed more balance with the tone I think. I guess my issue is that she isn't depicted as suffering in her death, and seems to get over it very quickly. They were self-indulgent and even pretty excessive, but they did make it seem like death wasn't just a horrible, endless, yawning void. Honestly, if the film had built up to those fantastical moments properly, I would have liked it.

That's really what the movie feels like to me. Sure, you miss your friends, but your fellow fatalities come dancing to greet you in a meadow of wildflowers, and how cool is that? You can get together in heaven with the other teenage victims of the same killer, and gaze down in benevolence upon your family members as they mourn you and realize what a wonderful person you were.

"The Lovely Bones" is a deplorable film with this message: If you're a 14-year-old girl who has been brutally raped and murdered by a serial killer, you have a lot to look forward to.

Then I read Ebert's review and everything he said immediately resonated with me. Like, I saw the movie on Starz/Encore a couple of days ago, and was just immediately struck by how loftily it treats death. It's almost like the movie presents Stanley Tucci as the hero.Įbert wrote a review about the movie that I wholeheartedly agree with. The entire second half of the movie is them investigating clues, and dancing all happy-like with Susan Sarandon. Except, no, they get over that about 30 minutes after she dies. She even gets mad at him for some reason, and the only thing I can think of is that her family is sad that she's dead.

I'm not really sure why, because it seems like all of his victims are way happier after being killed by him. Her death was painless, she gets over being dead almost immediately, she can still talk with her family after dying, and she even helps them solve her murder. She's transported to a fantastic land with other victims of Stanley Tucci, and seems much happier in death than in life. I don't think this is spoiling anything because it's 10 years old and the main character dies like 20 minutes in, but it seems to me like the movie just treats her death like it's not really a big deal.
